Driving UK–India Partnerships for Climate Action & Digital Innovation
The MInT Collaborative – IIT Madras was honoured to host Ms. Seema Malhotra FRSA, UK Member of Parliament, at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras today. Ms. Malhotra currently serves as the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State (Minister for Equalities), Department for Education and Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office. Her visit marks a key milestone in advancing collaborative efforts on sustainable mobility, climate action, and digital innovation.
During the engagement, Prof. Gitakrishnan Ramadurai, Faculty In-charge, MInT and Professor, DS&AI, Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI, IIT Madras and Mr. Sooraj E M from ITDP India, presented the vision and progress of PACT-Digi-PULSE (Thoothukudi) supported by the UK PACT (Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions) programme — a pioneering initiative to transform Thoothukudi’s urban planning and mobility landscape through climate-integrated, planning and Digital Twin – enabled approach that strengthens data-driven decision making at city level. The project is being implemented by IIT Madras in partnership with CENEX, TERI, and ITDP India. These efforts align with Tamil Nadu’s Climate Change Mission and the state’s goal of Net Carbon Neutrality before 2070.
Key highlights of the project:
• A climate-integrated urban mobility strategy aligned with Tamil Nadu’s decarbonisation pathway
• Deployment of Digital Twin–based planning to enhance Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) capabilities
• Developing connected, decongested, and people-centric urban spaces
• Improving access to climate finance for low-emission mobility solutions
• Building institutional capacity at city, state, and national levels
